I'm not sure Swallow has ever had a bunny this close to him voluntarily before. You'll have to forgive him for being just a little nervous.

Over on Subscribestar somepony mentioned that Pebble must be kind of gutsy to go into a fox burrow given what some of the other preds in the forest do to bunnies, and I'm really glad that somepony mentioned that. Remember that just one comic ago, Pebble was nervous to even approach Sam out in the open, even though they knew that Sam was safe. And sure, Pebble has all the guarantees she might want that Swallow is also safe, but it's still pretty scary to walk into any fox den.


So I hope that you don't think that Pebble is being too rude here - in reality they're making use of the same strategy that Sam used to make them feel comfortable. The more that Pebble talks and the more that they see Swallow's reaction, and the more that they push the boundaries to be a little bit dismissive or derisive towards him or call him weird - the less dangerous he seems and the more comfortable Pebble feels asking Swallow for a favor that puts them in a pretty vulnerable position.

Of course, as scared as Pebble is, Swallow is terrified right now X3 X3 He is not prepared for this kind of interaction with bunnies, and he's gotten scratched up enough that he's a little bit intimidated by buns, even at the same time that he compulsively keeps stalking them. Swallow is both aware that his company is both generally not wanted by most rabbits, and also totally, completely unable to keep himself away from them. X3

In this case that works to his favor, because the more that Swallow stares at Pebble like they're a nuclear bomb about to go off, the more that Pebble thinks, "ok, so you're not dangerous, you're just a fkn pain."
