Blue Sunny Day

- When Jonathan Coulton debuted this song at a concert in Chicago, he told the audience he wanted to make a happy song, so he thought he'd make it about sunshine and blue skies and call it "Blue Sunny Day". But then he noticed that the word "blue" could have another meaning...
He wondered who would be "blue" about a sunny day. Vampires, of course, but then he thought, no. What's more obvious than Jonathan Coulton writing another song about a sad and/or lonely monster?
But then he thought, "nah, it's totally a vampire".
However, if you listen closely to the lyrics, you'll see that there's actually nothing in there that says it's definitely about a vampire. It could just be a about a guy with Seasonal Affective Disorder or some other kind of depression.
But in my video, it's totally a vampire.
The song at the end of the video is "Re: Vos Cerveaux", Jonathan Coulton's french version of his "Re: Your Brains" (yes, that's really him singing in french).
Spiff, wherever you are now, I want you to know that your Wow music videos carried me through my childhood.
I am still here listening! Spiff we love you.
Less goooo
@@aaronpoole5655 I’m so glad people still watch his videos nothing makes me as nostalgic about anything than these videos
Same here haha
Ik been watching em since he first did it and it got me into JoCo who's just a fantastic artist. Love all his songs
When depression slaps me harder than usual, I spend an hour listening to JoCo and having a good cry.
You just perfectly described how I feel right now...Hope you're doing better..!
A happy song about a sad vampire who lost his wife & now is contemplating walking into the sunshine on the next Blue Sunny Day.
I hope you m8s are doing better. 💪
'It gets easier. But you have to do it everyday! That's the hard part! But it DOES get easier.'
( _cough cough_ Bojack Horseman - Poison 🖖)
This is the good old days I remember.. When I was just a kid and I was fascinated in WoW and these videos.. I used to constantly look at Spiffworld's videos and it got me into Jonathan Coulton. A great musician, with Spiffworld to make Jonathan's music into awesome videos! The most perfect combination.
Me too guys :(
One more here. I still listen to JoCo all the time, but I probably would never have learned the genius that is his music if it wasn't for Spiffworld giving me these awesome Machinima's to watch whenever WoW was under maintenance.
It's crazy to think that this particular video was one of his newer ones that I got excited to see come out at the time, and it's already over a decade old. I'll drink to the time slipping by bit.
i grew up watchin ur wow music vids,it will always have a special place in my heart, can't belive its already been 5-6 years since i first saw this
TheDiadara SAME! So nostalgic
Best machinima song vids ever
word!! back in elementary school coming home to play WoW and listen to JoCo.. the good ol days..
I watched these things since I was 5 or six. Can’t remember exactly.
That ending almost always makes me cry. Call me a softie if you like, something about it just hits me. "All at once I've had enough, as if I'm made of sterner stuff I take a breath and open up the door. Dawn breaks hard and falls on me, for just one moment, I can see the pale blue sky. ;_; I close my eyes because the world's so bright and beautiful I have to look away. Braced against the beauty of another perfect day.
As I go to pieces and the breeze blows me away,
One more blue sunny day,
Sunny day.........
" For one last, fleeting moment, in his life of darkness, with all his regrets and sadness he has one moment, one glorious moment where he can see the sun again, where he can feel it's warmth, where he perhaps feels happiness again, for one last, fleeting moment before he burns up and is gone. It's sad and beautiful and tragic all at the same time! Brilliantly written AND sung! The video is quite brilliantly done as well, showing the animals and sun and blue sky, all the things he's missed, longed to see, and finally is able to again, for that last wonderful moment, which ultimately means his death. ;_;
This song is brilliantly written! "Several hours later I'm the only one awake. All these streets are empty it's just me and my mistake. (Which could be referring to how he lost his love, OR, it could be referring to how he became a vampire. ) "One by one the stars go out this black sky turns to grey, one more blue, sunny day. " (COULD be referring to the coming dawn, OR it could be referring to millenia, aeons passing as his immortal unlife continues on as the stars literally burn out and die, yet he "lives" on. Brilliant! )
Its so wild to know this came out 14 years ago. Thank you Spiff, hope you're doing well 💙
Thank you Spiff for introducing me to JoCo. I still laugh at the "as my blood goes cold" line.
he doesnt hate them, he wants to go outside but hes a vampire, so hes trapped inside the dark
I live this! They played this after an episode of Rifftrax Live on Pluto.❤️💋
This video is the official music video to this song in my eyes. So much heckin' nostalgia, guys
I used to relate to this song on a weirdly literal level. I can’t go outside most days because of a sensitivity to sunlight.
FINALLY! I see another person sensitive to the sunlight!
Man, this brings me back. I didn't think it was this long ago.
I absolutely love this song. Sometimes sad songs should be upbeat :)
What a playful yet powerful song.
yea, this video completely blows it for the genius innuendo of the song. its better if you listen to it for the first time, then given the right context, listen to it again. Then boom, mind blowing awesomeness.
More than 10 years since the first time I saw this, and I realize now there's an elf at 1:12 doing coke
I was a fan of yours since the first Code Monkey Video.. that was apparently 13 years ago and this video is 10 years old. Fuck it still gets me. Miss you Spiff
This music video is a masterpiece. Inspired
I want this to be played at my funeral.
ahh, My awsome day just got better. My number one, all time favorite JoCo song, and then french Re:Your Brains.
Thank you Spiff, and happy holidays.
Man, i had such an awful day, this was just what i needed, thanks, mate!
it's about time this vid became the first one when you search this song
This song gives the word "Perfect" a new meaning. This is one of the greatest songs i have ever heard!
Keep up the good work:)
Still here after all these years
Jonathan Coulton has the most soothing voice.
I love it when people get the jokes. :)
If anyone else is addicted to this video+ this song, Thumbs up! JoCo forever!
MidniightHorizon's got it right -- that's a split screen showing you the Baron as well as the rising sun. It was intentional. I'm glad you liked some of my other special effects though. It's always gratifying when people notice the hard work that gets put into the videos. Thanks! :)
This video is fits the song SOOOOOO well, im not even kidding. Your use of characters, lyrical cues, and settings is amazing. Great Job!
OMG!!! This must be the first video Spiff EVER have made which ends happy! :D
3:16 almost a full decade before Thanos snapped!
Mister Stark, I don't feel so good.
I absolutely love this song and this video is perfect for it.
Johnathon Coulton creates another beautiful song and Spiff creates a fantastic piece of art. Three cheers to you both! (and five stars)
Watching this when I was younger, I thought it was just about a vampire.
Goddamn.
Please explain? Isin't it about a vampire ?
@@98gabrius it could be it could also be about depression
Kodiak Joco said it was a vampire, but you gotta admit, it dies have a double meaning.
this song always pulls my heart strings very saddening ....
Have you never gone to pieces when you get emotional about something as beautiful as the Baron is seeing? I've sure been blown away by something amazing, and I'll bet the Baron feels the same way about having the morning breeze on his face again. ;) I'm just saying, it's a clever bit of wordplay from Mr. Coulton.
The kitten was an excellent touch
another interpretation of this song is, the guy singing is a depressed young man that just lost recently had his heart broken by someone he loved, and he just thinks that everyone else is happy but him, and that everything around him is mocking him by being so perfect :o
Now I think of this song after I look at anything involved with vampires, and I have it entirely committed to memory. That is with no partial thanks to your video! =D
It's a common misconception. You see, some people mistake the vampire's body bursting into flames as sparkles.
awesum job, very nicely put together. I didnt catch the double ententra with the word blue till I read the discription after wathcing, I was thinking wow yeah thats right holy crap that just made the song even cooler.
Blue Sunny Day (and the associated video) is my favorite of Coulton's; I think it's his most musical song, and it's got more replay value than any of his other stuff for me
Ive watch your videos a thousand times... touches my song the lyrics and the video clips are amazing, keep up the good work (:
Mr spiff, you were my childhood. Thank you, man. You even replied to my channel comment back in the day, when those were a thing.
Thanks for enjoying my stuff. :)
Now every time i see a blue sky I think about this song and start singing it in my head. :)
Aww, a sad ending, but a cool song and a great video Spiff. The cat was just adorable. ^.^
Baron Von Emo: Nice!
Another great video! I love your choice for credits music.
Great work Mike. I just posted your interview as a video response. You'll have to OK it. This is definately one of my favorite videos you've done so far.
Who doesn't love a good old fashioned love song?
Re: Vos Cerveax?! FANTASTIC!!! Jon Coulton = WIN
I was at that show in Chicago!
Awesome song!
Awesome vid! :-)
@WOWLionblood In Adobe After Effects, you add each element to the shot separately. So the woman is on one layer, the man on another, the vampire on another and the background on another. Then you render the whole thing out as a single clip that goes into your video editor for the final product.
love your videos they go very well with coultons songs
I saw and liked all your videos, I love them :D good job Spiff !
Listening to this in 480p is amazing comparatively.
Man, i love your videos so much they fit extremely well with the song and i cant appreciate all the work you put into this enough! Jonathan would be proud ^^
Oh wow! Nice video! And I can't believe he's actually singing in french, he's good. o_o
As always, spiffworld, this is a brilliant merger of visual and lyrical storytelling. Your directing/composition is so detailed and artistic, but funny too. And the tiny details are always a treat. I've seen this video many times but only today noticed that at 1:41 - 1:45 when our hero stops by a store window, everything has a reflection except him. (I'm slow!) The best compliment I can give is that your aesthetic perfectly matches and illustrates JoCo's music. Bravo and thanks!
I was at the concert he premiered this song at! It was awesome.
Its songs like this that make you feel happy to be alive :)
LOL I love this song! It's got a definite 60's vibe to it. Reminds me of something Brian Wilson might write. Catchy as all get out.
Mike your so awesome, ive seen all your vids and none of them disappoint :D
Wow, great job on the video! JoCo for every win!
My absolute favorite song by JoCo!
I've watched this plenty of times, and I don't think I could do you justice with any sort of compliment! It told an amazing story that was funny, witty, sad, and dramatic, all in one video less than five minutes long!
The only mistake I found with the picture in that video was the purple line drawn in the middle of the screen from 2:50 to 2:53. Other than that, it was flawless.
You do Joco's songs a great justice, mate. Love your work. :)
Beautiful work as always.
I Love the work that went into this video
i honestly love how your videos have devoloped. I seem to love every new video more than the previous ones, yet they are all still very amazing.
Kudos 0_o
Love the instruments in this one.
beautiful, just beautiful
This video made everything make sense oh man
Lovely song and a fantastic video to visually represent it! Good job, dude!
Sad, but wonderful. Spiff... i love your videos. Good luck with what ur doing these days. Your talents. Thats clear to all of us... k. thx. bye ;).
awesome!
loled at Re: your brains at the end =)
Brilliant! As always!
French "RE: your brains"
LOVE IT!
OMG! RE: YOUR BRAINS!!!!! THAT'S MY FAVORITE SONG!!!
I LOVE YOU, SPIFFWORLD! *HUG*
xD
Very creative video! LOVE IT!
His French is... umm.. interesting. But I loved the video! Wonderful as always Spiff :)
@draconon97 I should have found a different way to handle that shot because a couple of people have been confused by the line. It's a split-screen. The guy is on the right, the sun is on the left, and there's a line between the two because it's not just one shot but two. That's obviously not clear enough though, so I'll be more careful in the future.
just awesome dude! your video fits like a glove!
5/5
The video toltally fits with the song! Nice job!
This song makes me sad and happy at the same time. I come to this vid often to listen to it and I really like Spiff's vids I wish he would come back :(
you're so right
time flies : s
Happy vampire song, love it! :)

Awesome video xD
Good job Mike !
Another amazing vid 5/5
Love the french version of Eat your brains =)
Beautiful song and nice video, well done
amazing! i love JC and ur works:)
ehheheheeeheehee I LOVE this!
He's totally a vampire.
its a bittersweet feeeeeeeeeeeling!!!
Has anyone considered "As I go to pieces and the breeze blows me away" is a metaphor for him being unable to stand the beauty of the world, as go to pieces is another way of saying "Broke down crying" and the breeze blowing him away just suggests he just wasn't thinking straight.
Wow, this is a master piece. Very rarely am I impressed at story telling, due to the amount of SHIT out there. But not only does this song match your video so well, your video is a great piece of story telling. Well done! I'll be watching this one again, and again, and again.
very touching....I didn't realize what was he doing until the end...
damn good job with this one spiff! this one and future soon are my favorites :> keep it up
Spiff, you rock I like your interpretations!
This is the most depressing upbeat song I've ever heard.
Ive seen this video so many times, and only now I just realized the girl isn't someone he pines for, but his passed on wife.. well. that just makes this sad but upbeat song even more sad.. poor vampire.. and especially poow kittycat.
