I grew up in the 80s and there were so many things, like this song, that were so cringeworthy yet so catchy. The Duffer Brothers obviously felt the same way. I always felt this song was the most memorable thing about that movie

I agree. The 80s, as a decade, may have ended 1 Jan 1990, but as an emotion, a life, an experience, it'll only die when those of us who felt and experienced that era are gone, and even then the spirit will remain through those who may not have lived then, but live the 80s in their hearts today.

I'm 66 years young listening to 80's music most of the time. Loved this movie and this song. I watch it every now and then with daughters and grandkids. Will now be adding my soon to be, two years old great-granddaughter. She is a country girl in high gear. Peace and love to all.

For most of '84 I was 18 years old, until I turned 19 in October. Listening to this song as well as so many other 80s tunes takes me back to good times as well as bad times. But in the end, it was my youth. I can cry a bit about how life was during those years, but I can also smile about the good times with family and friends. I miss being 18.

I don't even watch Stranger Things but I have clear memories of this song being on the radio seemingly every hour on the hour that summer of 1984. I was 8 going on 9 years old and the target audience for it. Oddly, I never saw the movie until I was older and got tired of the song quick. I love the rather cheesy musical sequence in Stranger Things this song pops up in and how a younger audience is discovering it. It was probably when "peak '80s" was achieved.

I'm with you brother. When I was explaining the meaning of the movie to my kids I started crying. The Nothing is adulthood trying to wipe out childhood. Imaginations from the Otherside by Blind Guardian is about the same thing. Adulthood creeps in trying to wipe out our childhood, making us forget the fairy tales, the adventures of Tom Sawyer, Robinson Crusoe, Bilbo and Frodo, King Arthur. I refuse to let it wipe out my memory, imagination.

And then we find out that nobody ever landed on the moon, NASA is faking space, AND earth is flat.
I loved this song in "The Neverending Story" - a sad but heartwarming tale when a bereaved only child, whose mother passed away immerses himself in a fantasy world around a magical book in this true 80s classic. Not sure if the later stuff measures up, but will check it out.
If you treasure your memories of the original, I would avoid the sequels like The Nothing!
I only remember a little of the second one, but I'm pretty curious now. However, the one or two that followed that were an absolute joke. Totally frivolous, low-budget kids stuff.
And the book the movie was based on was written by Michael _Ende_ .
