The icy spires of the library stood in stark contrast to the vibrant forest around it, their crystalline brilliance casting scattered rainbows across the snowy clearing. The dragoness lingered at the edge of the celebration, her fur shimmering with the same frosted elegance as the library itself. She was an ice dragoness of pride, wisdom, and hunger—not always in that order.
Her arrival was greeted with awe and gratitude, but the warmth of celebration was fleeting as chaos descended. The creature—a writhing, many-eyed monstrosity of sinewy limbs and gnashing maws—burst into the clearing, and the gathered witches, elves, and humans scattered like leaves before the wind. It was instinct, pure and simple.
But the dragoness was no stranger to such interlopers.
With a resonant growl that made the snow tremble, she lunged forward, her frost-laden breath encasing the ground and slowing the creature's movements. The battle that followed was fierce and raw—a clash of predator and prey, with the dragoness’s icy power meeting the creature’s alien strength. The tentacles writhed, grasping at her legs and wings, but she would not falter. With a triumphant roar, her jaws closed around its core. One by one, the slick, flailing limbs disappeared, pulled into her maw with an almost lazy indulgence.
The fight ended as quickly as it had begun. The dragoness let out a low, satisfied rumble, the bulge in her belly shifting as her digestive magic went to work. She padded toward the feast, her steps heavy, her tail swishing in a satisfied arc.
The cheers and laughter resumed, the terror forgotten in the warmth of the victory and the feast that awaited. But one figure stood out—Jess, the human at the head of the table. Her brown hair fluttered in the chill wind, and her eyes darted nervously toward the dragoness as she approached.
The dragoness noted her with mild amusement, deciding it might be entertaining to settle behind her. She lowered herself carefully, her furred form pressing against the snow-covered ground as her belly, still gurgling and swollen with her recent meal, nestled against Jess's back.
Jess stiffened, her fork frozen mid-air. The dragoness chuckled, a sound that rolled like distant thunder.
"Relax, little one," she purred, her voice smooth and icy. "If I wanted to eat you, I wouldn’t have waited this long."
The human managed a weak laugh, the red flush on her cheeks almost as vibrant as the cranberry sauce on her plate. She straightened her back slightly, though the gurgling warmth of the dragoness’s belly was impossible to ignore. Every muffled churn and groan seemed magnified by proximity, a reminder of the tentacled beast’s fate.
The dragoness glanced at her, noting the nervous energy that radiated from the human. With a small, toothy grin, she let her tail curl protectively around Jess’s chair.
"You’re safe," she said, her tone reassuring.
The crowd raised their glasses, the toast echoing in the crisp winter air. "To the dragoness!"
Jess swallowed hard, her fingers trembling as she raised her own glass. "T-to the dragoness," she echoed, her voice barely a whisper.
The dragoness rumbled again, pleased, and let her eyes drift shut. The feast carried on, and though Jess remained acutely aware of every movement behind her, the warmth of the dragoness’s presence was oddly comforting.
For once, she wasn’t prey—she was a guest.
And that, in a world where the line between the two blurred so easily, was something to be thankful for.
