Countess Aliénor wants her son to marry an heiress, but he has fallen in love with his adopted sister, Marian. Her solution is simple: "Nicholas cannot marry a bad smell."
***
For those who are interested, Marian is based on Sonja from War and Peace, which I enjoyed last year. I thought she deserved better than the ending she got, so I wrote one which is much worse. The miraculous workings of the human mind, everybody!

Fun idea. Nicholas disowns his son or daughter for marrying someone penniless.
Than he finds the truth of what happened to his first crush, and has a bit of heel realization.
He than starts trying to hunt down his child realizing he does not know where they are and are undoubtably in a bad position.
The worst option would be for the heir to be fatal voted and Nick can at best avenge them.
The option I lean to would be for heir to be in very bad position where things have taken a harsh mental and physical toll on them.
Their also the option where they did fine and the father meeting a chilly reception in a what are you doing there kind of way.
For more fun the father could be rendered sterile so he has a less than pure reason for finding out, maybe he tried to track down his old flame because he was concerned he might of gotten her pregnant and figured he needed the heirs.

I was actually working off a similar-ish plot to this for the sequel to 'The Wedding Gift', but it stalled. I'm not sure I have it in me to write sequels at the moment. But some day I'd like to write something with a multigenerational aspect.

You read all of War and Peace?

Yep. It's long, but the characters are compelling and there's a streak of comedy running through it that stopped it being a dry read. I did skip over some of the historical/philosophical tangents though.

Great work on the story you do these very well I like the historical aspect
You know it would’ve been ironic if this caused him to distrust women so much that he became essentially a complete Scrooge unwilling to marry anyone because he viewed it as a waste of his time and resources after all if his true love would abandon him why trust anyone else.
Or he could find out in his subconscious and become like Jack the Ripper but for noblewomen could be interesting your thoughts?

I modelled Nicholas on the Nicholas in War and Peace, who promises to marry his penniless cousin Sonja before throwing her over for Princess Mary, who is his social equal. Sonja stays as a sort of governess for the family, a "sterile flower" who never marries. Which is almost a worse fate than Marian's. So that's why I went for the ending I did for Nicholas: he does come around to his family's thinking in the end. Besides, he's young, and at that age passions come and go. He loved Marian, but all he has is her memory while Lady Elizabeta is right there in the flesh. I don't fault him for not being constant.

I would disagree on the idea that being melted alive is less bad than just being unable to have kids as a person who does not have children
Still think he should make his wife a present of his female family after all she could use the extra weight to bear children safely
