That landscape around the worm makes me think of Dune, especially it the worm's back is segmented.

Choppy in this contest i guess could mean "sloppy" or "unproffesional".

I dont think it looks that "unprofessional" it has a simplistic style, yet the linework looks very precise and fine. Though to me it seems like a fresh oldschool choice of style, like a very old video game, which is remembered by very few, yet valued highly.
