An alicorn princess needs more than hay and cake, the dutiful guards and servant ponies knows this and willingly offers themselves to be a part of the princess. Tho some gets cold hooves at the last minute. Celestia demonstrates this to Twilight, while a guard offers himself up to be her first Alicorn meal.
This drawing was sitting unfinished since 2015, I finally got to finish this!

Only at the last moment do you ask yourself: was my service worth it? Was it worth the long years of training only to come to this end? Or am I just another body to be buried and never remembered again.
