Incidentally, the opening sentence to this is, in my own humble opinion, both the best and worst sentence I have ever written. I wasn’t planning on re-using these characters, or at least so soon, but I’d had an idea for something kind of like this ages ago (before the 'forbidden fruit' memes even) and a few things clicked into place after I thought about a good character to do this too.

I agree! Jesse and Alex A+. I mean so are all of your characters but I like the dynamic between these two.
I think you touched on an interesting point here which is bioaccumulation in predators- it might be fun to see a story where that happens but with, like, el vore
