Rachel and Julie were surfing the web when they came across a strange site. This was similar to other sites on the internet they had seen stating they could be re-classified as livestock. As weird as it seemed, the author of the site claimed this was totally legal and legitimate.
They both stared at each other in amazement as they read the pages delving deeper into the site and becoming more and more convinced it was an elaborate hoax. The site was laid out seemingly professional, yet offered small clues that it was a hoax. It reminded them of Perro Loco's site.
Secretly, they wondered if he had once again branched out with a new offering. Although they hesitated, they kept finding a page asking for personal information to "volunteer". It cited several news stories about the cattle ban throughout the world as a result of the BSE epidemic that was raging over the world. It had severely affected beef prices and availability throughout the world.
The author had even referenced US Code claiming this was legal and legitimate.
Being bored in general and not taking the site as seriously as they should, they began to fill out the information on the site with random information. Once the first page was filled in, they clicked submit. After a lengthy pause, and error message filled the screen stating that the supplied information could not be verified and appeared to be inaccurate.
After several attempts to fool the system, they decided to use real information.
Julie had volunteered her information and began filling out that first page. Once her name, address and phone number were entered, Rachel clicked Submit.
After several seconds, and again waiting for the all too familiar error page, a new page was shown, prompting for additional information.
This page asked more personal information such as gender, height, weight, measurements, hair color, eye color, fitness level. After submitting this page, Julie started to wonder where this personal information was going and who would use it. She quickly snapped out of this as the next page was shown prompting for medical information including hospitalizations, medications, allergies, illness, etc. She quickly filled this page out and submitted.
After a long pause, a message was displayed thanking her for her information, and a checkbox to indicate she had read the agreement.
Without stopping she checked the box and clicked OK.
Moments later, a single line message was all that was left on the screen 'Application Submitted'.
The back browser button no longer worked and they had to type in new URL's to visit other sites. They spent some time trying to find the site
again so Rachel could add her information, but alas they couldn't track it down.
Eventually tiredness took over and they went home and slept. Days later the midnight web surfing is a distant memory.
...
Many weeks later, Julie is getting ready for another day at work. While showering, she hears her doorbell. Turns off the water, and pauses to see if its just a package
being left, or if someone is actually here to see her. The doorbell rings again, and quickly Julie jumps out of the shower grabbing a towel and expertly wraps it around herself
as she runs to the front door. Speaking through the door, she asks 'Who is it?'. 'Handley Meats' comes the muffled reply.
'Um, just a minute let me put something on', stammers Julie. 'Its Ok miss, we can take care of this in just a couple minutes if you open the door', comes the reply.
Cautiously, Julie peers through the peep-hole in the door to see a tallish man dressed in white overalls and a satchel in his hand.
Nervously, Julie unlocks the door and opens it, to reveal the smiling man. 'May I come in please?', he asks.
'Oh, uh, yes of course, please', Julie says as she steps out of the way.
Closing the door after he enters Julie asks what this is all about. Instantly the man pulls a clipboard hanging on the side of the bag, and reads it.
'Are you Julie Reynolds?', he inquires, looking up from the clipboard. 'Um, yes, what is this about?', asks Julie nervously.
'I have been sent from Handley Meats, to retrieve a volunteer, you', he says looking Julie over.
'Whatever do you mean, volunteer?', asks Julie unsure of what's going on.
Again, he looks over the clipboard and hands it to Julie, do you remember filling out this application?
Looking over the paper on the clipboard, memories of that night several weeks ago come flooding back.
Oh, I thought this was a hoax. I didn't mean for you to take this seriously. I'm so very sorry, but this has all been a huge mistake.
No miss, I'm afraid it isn't. Pointing to the last page, 'Is this your electronic signature, stating you have read and will comply with the above agreement with accordance with federal, state and local laws?'
Feeling very nervous and scared now, 'Oh, I don't want to get into trouble here and I certainly don't want you to think I'm just making trouble. But this is all a mistake.'
'No miss, there is no mistake. You are the property of Handley Meats and you must come with me'
'I demand that you leave at once, before I call the police.', she hissed.
'Miss, need I remind you, you are our property. Very well', reaching into his pocket for a cell phone, dials a number
After a quick pause, 'Please connect me with Mr. Davis', he states.
'Mr. Davis, we have a situation here, she is claiming its all a misunderstanding and is demanding I leave the premises'
'Yes sir, she has threaten to contact the local police. Yes sir, I understand.', looking up from the phone he notes the time.
'Miss, please call the police tell them you have a code 729' Looks back at the phone. Yes, I've given her the code for the police,
should I wait outside until there arrival?' he queries with the man on the other end. 'No sir, she is standing right here'
He hands Julie the phone, and she gently places it against her ear, 'um hello?'
'Hello, my name is Mr. Davis, I'm the regional manager for Handley Meats'
This certainly isn't the best way to get started, but from what I'm gathering from Mr. Ross, is you are disputing the agreement you signed?'
Is that correct?. 'Um, yes it is.
Alright, and why do you think this agreement is wrong, you did state you signed your name, correct?
Um, yes but...
And that you read the agreement?, is that correct?
'Um, I did check the box, but I didn't actually read the agreement'
'Oh, I see. Well, I would recommend you do so at this point, before things escalate too far, ok'
At this, Julie looked at the agreement and read through it. It had a lot of legal speak and contained references to US code regulations on the conversion of humans to livestock, the FEMA regulations for emergencies, and the consequences of not following the agreement as stated.
The agreement contained a section of giving up your natural rights as a human to become food for others, and how legally this is handled and explained for work and family.
