Poor Leo can only watch as the crocodile then turns around, (un)intentionally showing off its filled gut as it retreats back into the depths of the water where Leo can't go after it, with Conan's outfit moving back to the surface about a minute later or so. Leo falls to his knees, already believing the crocodile has begun to digest its large meal, his beloved Sumi included, causing him to cry out in despair, having tried his best to save her, only to be bested in the end...

He should've tried to absorb the whole crocodile along with everybody inside, and releasing only Sumi, while keeping predators permanently absorbed.

Nah, that wouldn't work, especially since the croc is stronger and would likely eat Leo before he could even try anything.
