Cassandra Page is a mother, author, editor and geek. She lives in Canberra, Australia’s bush capital, with her son and two Cairn Terriers. She has a serious coffee addiction and a tattoo of a cat—despite being allergic to cats. She has loved to read since primary school, when the library was her refuge, and loves many genres, all of them speculative fiction. When she’s not reading or writing, she engages in geekery, from Doctor Who to AD&D. Because who said you need to grow up?

"Aspiring writer" sounds to me like a description of someone that wants to write and isn't. It took a long time for me to admit I was a writer, rather than an aspiring one -- it wasn't until I completed my first manuscript that I was finally prepared to own the label. I understand the desire to put a caveat on the front, but if you write, you're a writer. ("Aspiring author" is a whole different kettle of fish, but the answer about writing is still a good one.)

If you're struggling with the draft of your first novel, the most important thing I can tell you is not to overanalyse it too much. It's a truism that all first drafts are kind of rubbish. The glorious thing about this whole process is that once you've written "THE END", you can take a break and then go back to your manuscript with fresh eyes. That's when the real fun of polishing and rearranging and snipping begins.

Well, it's fun for me. YMMV. ;) (less)

One is the sequel to Lucid Dreaming, my adult urban fantasy about dreams and nightmares. The other is a historical fantasy inspired by Ancient Greece. (less)

Review: ‘The Scorpio Races’ by Maggie Stiefvater

It happens at the start of every November: the Scorpio Races. Riders attempt to keep hold of their water horses long enough to make it to the finish line. Some riders live. Others die.

At age nineteen, Sean Kendrick is the returning champion. He is a young man of few words, and if he has any fears, he keeps them buried deep, where no one else can see them.
