I would advise you to play the old version first, then the new one.
The old version will give you a better understanding of the storylines and the game world as a whole.
The new one is a kind of deep pre-alpha of the author's new vision of the game. Very much cut down in terms of game content.
The new version is self-sufficient, you don't need to play the old version to complete it
Why do i always struggle to get past steps in the rebecca and Jenna branch (which is the biggest content). this is extremely frustrating, it doesnt tell me how to progress...
End all branches you are not interested in. In most cases you can proceed. And be happy you can do it, because the new version does not allow this.

In the Alpha route, you reject your wife, basically despising her, but technically she is your wife! But it's all done in a very vague way! Like the scene at the beginning when the protagonist watches his wife getting fucked in an alley outside a bar:

There is only text on the plot, no video. So unless the author starts remaking the game from the very beginning, there is no way to fix it.
