Mari sighed, curling up tight and waiting for the next chunk of her captor’s meal to drop down. She hadn’t bought herself much time—either the picnic basket would empty or Sweetheart would tire of stuffing herself even further—but it might be enough that her friends could save her before she was melted down into princess pudge. Although…she wasn’t quite sure if they’d have enough clams to pay their way through all the toll gates…and they might not be able to make it in time even if they did…especially considering that she was being carried further and further into the depths beyond the Underwater Highway.
