Not gonna lie... I'm caught off-guard that this is heading towards a bad ending; I was expecting the beginning of the end for the group.
Or maybe this will get there soon enough; and a glimmer of hope will shine on the boy? Questions, questions.

Taking away glimmers of hope in stories makes the characters threatened. That means the readers would also feel it

Aye, aye. So long as it's not overdone it's perfectly fine; I've read stories where it starts going down, and it's a downhill spiral: With one side completely powerless (to the point that all efforts fail just to give the story a conclusion) rather than letting the character's (strengths/intellect/slyness) shine.
