"A dead society is a polite society." -Alendia
Here's an alternative scenario where Irahel's quest to Deermire fails catastrophically. Everyone's dead, including her soon, and with no lvl 10 couatl nor goddess-granted one-up, there's no rescuing her from the undead. What mercy can she hope to receive?
This piece can be read as a stand-alone story without missing any key context, however it contains some spoilers for Good Knight and Good Luck, so if you wish to check out the canon route you can start by clicking here.
In the original story, the Corpse Flower appears as the final antagonist but doesn't get much love (as far as preds usually go). This bad ending rectifies that a little, and since there's no Tonalnan, she doesn't have to fear any retribution. At least for the time being...

Well, I can't say I buy the overall sentiment However, there is a consistency that Irahel doesn't have the strength of spirit to be a real hero.

I feel like that's a harsh judgement though she certainly is susceptible to temptation. Though overcoming that temptation is part of being a hero. I can't say she'll do a consistently good job at it though; there's a particularly silly moment planned in her next canon adventure.

We'll have to see how she progresses, of course.
Giving the Corpse Flower more character was nice. What I disagree with is trying to paint it that that the canon route is the only one where Irahel continues her career without dying or giving up.

In which sense? Do you mean that in all what-ifs I've made Irahel ends up dying or abandoning a heroic quest, or are you responding to something else I said?

That's basically it. Obviously, they're supposed to be short stories. But it's starting to feel like they're part of a larger strategy to "prove" the original story wasn't a Mission Failed by showing all the other ways it could have gone wrong instead.
Perhaps it came across harsher than I intended. It's nice to hear that there's something new for Irahel in the future.

I mean, technically Irahel did save the village for a brief m- ah, who am I kidding.
Irahel aside, maybe you are onto something here. Deermire being in a tough situation no matter what due to things outside Irahel's control might be an angle I'm going with. With that said, Deermire wasn't doomed: In Her Celestial Coils shows an "everybody lives" scenario (barring Hugo, and earlier victims).
A scenario where Irahel and the militia get defeated by the Corpse Flower but are rescued by Tonalnan is also possible, as is a scenario where Tonalnan or Vaeliara just firebombs the swamp from above and then leaves Deermire alone, as is a scenario where Thok's orcish relatives ride in from across the border to save the day. None of these would probably have enough vore to justify me making them into a story, unless I felt really motivated to write a non-vore story someday.
That said, I do not want every alt scenario to be as dark as this one. Some will probably just be "Irahel settled down with someone or did nicely for herself but simply diverged from what I plan for her in canon". If every alt scenario showed Irahel getting offed in a sadistic fashion, then World of Alivia would start to feel like one of those settings where everything is out to kill you, preds have complete reign and if you get eaten the narrator goes "It's a dark world out there. One should never let their guard down or make the slightest mistake. This prey learned this lesson the hard way..."
