Prelude to a TTRPG-style adventure in a very hungry world. Viv, the half-orc sorcerer, begins tempting old friends toward a life of endless possibilities.
---
Humans are a highly social species with round heads and small amounts of fur. They are a Proclaimed species, like Elves, goblins, or some fae. That is, they were never ascended from a lesser animal or form of nature, but spoken deliberately into existence, with forms determined through divine decree. Several gods take human appearance when manifesting.
Like most proclaimed species, humans have talent for learning magic, but are especially vulnerable to transformative magic. Their large numbers and the particular ease of transforming them, even among other proclaimed species, makes humans a favored target of magic users and beings who reproduce by transforming others.
With the exception of a few noteworthy clans (or obviously, domains under certain gods' blessing), humans have somewhat low incidence of andromorphism, gynomorphism, and hermaphrodism. Perhaps amusingly, more than one human student of the Praedbridge School of Bards hailed from a community so isolated and modest, that these concepts were first introduced to them upon school grounds. Humans have a high degree of social adaptability and low dimorphism (not to mention susceptability to transformation), so gender expression varies across region, and may be extremely flexible to an individual.
Humans have no natural weapons; even their genitals tend to be harmless. Many rely on social structure, magic, or defensive equipment for protection. Humans are famed as avid craftspeople, and are widely considered some of the best, most adaptable cooks in all creation. While humans sometimes experience social self-sacrifice instincts, and can easily develop lust toward being prey, most scholars reject labeling humans as a prey species.
When left on their own, humans often build large, reliable societies with strict codes of conduct. In mixed settings, they tend to embrace other cultures and adapt, reshaping their own societal expectations. They frequently establish the conditions needed to multiply and expand, and are seen as agreeable by many others, so humans are commonly found throughout the world.
The god Arun is primarily concerned with increasing human influence. Many gods are favorable toward humans out of appreciation for their respective qualities.

Love the playful dialogue and the foreshadowing.

Thank you! I'm excited to kill off any the main characters, but it's hard to resist growing attached and giving them plot armor.
