Lady Isa wakes up in the morning to a concerning report involving her protege. Irahel is summoned to answer about a mysterious disappearance.
Hello all! This is the third chapter of A Protege's Return, my story following my original character Irahel Maplelover and her mentorship under the ranger Isa Keeneye. The story takes place in the original setting World of Alivia, created by me and Neoneo

So that's the way it goes, eh?
The Masters not wanting to publicize that a celestial had gone rogue makes a kind of sense. They're still giving Tonalnan (and Alendia) too much credit if they really think that this could be part of a long-term plan to beef up border security. (It does need it, but it's doubtful the couatl gave that much thought.)
Irahel being reassured that she'd made the right choices at the time makes sense, although the devil is in the unshared details.
We'll have to wait and see what changes are going to be made, and what Isa has in mind for Irahel's future.

Yea, when we exchanged comments under Tombstone Flower and I mentioned that Deermire might've been in a tough situation due to things beyond Irahel's control, this is what I was getting at.
We don't know what Tonalnan said to the villagers as they were eaten off-screen. Perhaps the precarious situation did not escape Tonalnan's notice, and she made an offer to Thok and Sol with that in mind. Not that it would have made her necessarily justified, nor would the villagers' existence in her internal paradise be more valuable or valid than the lives they would've led on the outside.
And of course, there's a chance that not every deity in the pantheon is happy with Deermire's disappearance...

Irahel did get some divine blessings in a tough spot that clearly had nothing to do with Tonalnan or Clerical spells. I (and Irahel, if I recall correctly) attributed that to Alendia. But who knows for sure?
If it was Alendia, that contributes to the "So what was the point of that, then?" feeling we even saw a bit of from Irahel.

There was that voice that saved her in Lewd Lurkers. Irahel guessed that it belonged to Alivia or another one of her servants, though she didn't delve on it long. Could have maybe been Alendia, or a different deity or celestial. At the very least she didn't sound like Tonalnan.
There's also I guess the mystery of the talking cricket in that same chapter, though it was meant as a throwaway gag and a silly reference at first.
The main confirmed mention of Alendia during the Deermire quest, Knights aside, was with the spell Flames of Purification iirc, but that was just a power-up Tonalnan gave to Irahel's blades temporarily.

There were signs that Irahel might have a great destiny she was being built up to. (Signs that went beyond Tonalnan buttering her up.) As such, it's not a surprise that some deities might be unhappy with how Irahel's "simple early leveling-up adventure with a twist" went. At best, Tonalnan unnecessarily risked breaking Irahel's spirit or turning Irahel against divinity (Alendia, another patron, or in general).
(Of course, it seems to have been indicated that Irahel's actual destiny is to give up on the idea of great quests and wander with her Jiang-Shi girlfriend. ;))

That last part had me wheezing.
I'll reveal that in another projected future Irahel becomes an alter ego in the form of a small orange cat who travels from world to world to incite various chaos-oriented shenanigans (vore, but not only). Maybe she's the one who instigated the mass vore scene Qega came across, becoming the very architect of a destiny she once sought to prevent...

Huh, that's strange. How would a completely separate reality tie into chaos-Irahel's motivation like that?
Posted by IddlerItaler 7 months ago Report
Good question. Perhaps by increasing the amount of raw chaos through impossibility. Or maybe she just wanted a fun story.
